What ‘turn the other cheek’ means (and doesn’t) in an age of terrorism

The horrific attacks in Brussels, claimed by ISIS, have left us once again shocked. Jesus has something powerful to say to the problem, but his words need to be carefully understood before being applied.

My Thoughts (written some years ago)

IS WAR EVER JUSTIABLE?

When Jesus spoke about “loving one’s enemies”, he wasn’t speaking about war situations, as Christianity maintains that war is justified in certain situations (and as an absolutely final resort after all other options (to preserve peace) have been exhausted) – to remove evil tyrants and dictators, who are killing scores of innocent civilians (as an Adolf Hitler did). Muhammar Gaddafi? But then what about a situation like Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe???

At an individual level, I just believe each person has to decide for themselves how to respond to terrorism…to evil in the world . To be passive (surrender), or to fight it with everything we have? (Does the means justify the end?) We are all given free will (individual choice) in this matter, together with a sound mind (see Romans) to make these sorts of decisions in our own hearts and minds…

and that’s how I believe Jesus would respond

TODAY!

Armistice Day: “Lest we Forget”

November 11, 2015

“We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.”

From ‘In Flanders Fields, by John McCrae

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, 1918, the Armistice signed at Compiègne came into effect.

Not for the mistaken glory of war, nor for their valour, nor the sacrifice of their lives on the altar of politics, but for Peace.

We will remember.

The Uselessness of the UN

“The United Nations has proven itself as a failure for its entire history and will continue being useless. Maybe if peaceful countries withdraw their membership and stop participating in the United Nations in protest, will force the United Nations to abandon its old methods of dealing with non-peaceful and non-humanitarian nations.”

Why can’t the leaders of America, Russia, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Quatar, Turkey, China and all the countries of the world (with or without the UN) possess the moral WILL to agree somehow to stop the slaughter?
And the first step (small) is agreeing to stop the export of arms, which simply pour fuel on the flames of hate.

My Prayer for the World

As a “quite spiritual”, but not “religious type of person”*, I wrote this piece quickly some years back, which was inspired by and adapted from Marianne Williamson’s Prayer for Kosovo (1999) http://marianne.com. So sharing a few thoughts, which may be of interest and freely published, electronically or in print. Enjoy…

SHARING MY PRAYER FOR THE WORLD

Dear God, Creator of the Universe

As YOU know, so many people are going through extreme hardship and suffering . Also in our hearts, many of us are very troubled by the world today being in such a mess, because of natural disasters, man’s inhumanity to man, lack of understanding and intolerance of others, desire for power, “pure evil” and so on. At this time of Celebration in so many privileged countries (like mine, the paradise that is tranquil New Zealand), I feel so helpless, so am asking for divine intervention through the power of concentrated prayer world-wide…

Please bring a miracle especially to the people of Iraq, Chechnya, DRC (Congo), Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya and Zimbabwe and all the victims of the recent tsunami in South-East Asia, but to ALL the world; so that every person on this planet has some food to eat. Bring forth some goodness out of the ravages of the many wars (some decades-old) and natural disasters throughout this world. As we are all connected (no matter where in the world we may live), please touch ALL hearts, especially in the ‘trouble-spots’ of the globe…through changing people’s hearts and inner spirits amidst the strife, violence and war. We send forth positive thoughts for Good: ones of comfort, forgiveness, thoughts of peace and especially love to every ‘child of God’ in this drama of pain. Still through YOU, we can see in our hearts one day the seemingly impossible – a world one day surrounded by peace and love. ‘A world at peace with itself’. One lit within by YOUR indistinguishable and ever-present light, that shines through the Goodness of so many people in countless diverse countries on ‘mother earth’.

Lord, please do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Only YOU can make a transition in the world, in the hearts and minds of our leaders, a change of mind-set – a shift of human consciousness: from one ‘power centred in brute force to the power centred in soul force’, the ‘generosity and nobility of spirit’. Awaken our spirits with the immeasurable power of LOVE, a force more powerful than bullets. Show the world leaders a different way of thinking, a new way of viewing seemingly insurmountable problems as challenges… to take the ‘high-road of our shared humanity’ as citizens of this world. Shift our leaders’ mindsets to the higher consciousness of POSSIBILITIES. So that out of much chaos and misery, the powerful decision-makers of this world may even see great opportunities for taking action not out of vested self interest, but doing good – simply doing what is RIGHT through being led by Your Infinite Spirit.

We are all connected, no matter where we may live. And isn’t what connects us all far stronger than what divides us? There is neither east nor west, tribe nor ethnicity, male or female, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Christian nor Jew. There is only a God-filled humanity, the divine spark that lies within us all and unites our distinctive spirits. So God, help each one of us to build bridges, rather than barriers; let us project a spirit of openness rather than walls. Uplift our consciousness, our individual spirits to be all that You want them to be. Let us look at the ‘possibility’ of distant horizons together in a spirit of tolerance, acceptance, helpfulness, co-operation, co-existence and peace. So they have the CHOICE to think and live at that highest level. Lord, let our leaders look at the future with a ‘grand vision of possibility’ – to see things not as they are, but what they could one day become …and so leave a wonderful legacy on this amazing planet of ours for the ‘Greatest Good’ of ALL humanity.

Each one of us has in our hearts the most powerful force in the world. But only YOU have the power to change man’s hearts and spirits. Raise our levels of consciousness through igniting the embers of our souls with the power, the divine spark of YOUR infinite LOVE. Every torch that You light in even the darkest heart ignites the immeasurable,
the highest and brightest spirit of the shared humanity, that lies within each one of us.

Like a candle in a darkened window at midnight, bring forth that bright light, your truth, dear God, especially in Iraq; but throughout this very troubled world. Fuel a vision of hope for the world with Your Unlimited Love. May love and peace one day prevail on Planet Earth, in the soul of every man, every woman and every child.
God, as all that is Good and the embodiment of Unlimited Love, please bless ALL the citizens of this amazing, sad-happy world of ours.

God, as the Ultimate Source of all Life, the Essence of Existence, the Ground of all Being, I’m available; so use me in some way, according to Your Will. Broaden our horizons for all the rich promises You have in store for each one of us, Your children.

Thank you

Amen

“Lord, make me a channel of thy peace…”

December 29, 2014

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace;
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.

All Peoples Have Right to Peace

October 18, 2014

light (GREAT)

Column
All peoples have right to peace
Saturday, October 11, 2014 by Bob Hughes

We must douse the fires of extremism and tackle the root causes of conflict.” This from UN Secretary General Ban Ki- Moon during last month’s International Day of Peace.

Ironically, the very next day (September 22) the United States and its allies unleashed 200 airstrikes and tomahawk missiles on Sunni militant targets in Syria and Iraq.

President Barack Obama said this was just the beginning. “We’re going to do what’s necessary to take the fight to this terrorist group,” he said.

The so-called Islamic State flouts Islamic principles. Islam means a commitment to live in peace through submission to the will of God (Allah).

In 2004 President Obama said: “I have a deep faith. So I draw from the Christian faith.” Is not Christianity about peace and goodwill to all?

Religion plays no part in this conflict. It is wayward humans who are responsible for this unstoppable war in this strife-torn, oil-rich region of the Middle East — the Cradle of Civilisation. How bizarre.

The West now admits the illegal 2003 American-led invasion of Iraq created the vacuum that allowed ISIS to flourish.

Injustice breeds injustice, hatred breeds hatred, cruelty breeds cruelty, war leads to more war. Here we have proof that war does not bring peace.

President Bush’s 2001 “war on terror” speech put paid to dialogue with terrorists, leaving violence as the only alternative.

There is much more to this conflict than the limited information we are fed by the news media.

“All things are linked with one another, and this oneness is sacred. There is nothing that is not interconnected with everything else. For things are interdependent, and they combine to form this universal order.” — Caesar Marcus Aurelias, 2nd century.

This year the UN International Day of Peace, on September 21, coincided with UN Global Day of Action on Climate Change. Linking the two, Ban Ki-Moon said the United Nations was established “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war . . . . It is now addressing the scourge of climate change. We urge the adoption of an approach that addresses both together”.

Since the Kyoto Accord of 1998, the US military has been exempted from calculations of greenhouse gas emissions — despite being the most excessive emitter of all.

Today’s profit-motivated wars consume immense amounts of fossil fuels and render large areas uninhabitable due to land mines, toxins and other wastes. Modern warfare devastates and disrupts ecosystems, and contributes hugely to global climate change.

It is no secret our planet’s mineral reserves are dwindling fast, and access to oil resources has been a major factor behind Western military interest in the oil-rich Middle East.

Forget about good guys and bad guys. War wrenches world cultures apart, devastates the environment, and separates much of what binds all things together.

Human welfare, the health of our planet, climate change action and world peace. All are linked.

Let’s all do what we can to preserve the future. October 12-19 is the week of prayer for world peace.
